Students are the main idea and supporting detailsand writing summaries that include key vocabulary from the text. Topics include animals, habitats, and weather. Our previous Essential Learning Outcome was Summarizing a Fictional Text. Click on the link to view the graphic organizer that we have been using in class. Fables and fairy tales are great stories to share with your child to discuss story elements. Students are also writing narrative stories that include a beginning, middle, and end. They are learning to use various techniques for entertaining beginnings to hook the reader as well as to add elaborative detail to story critical objects, settings, and characters to make their writing more interesting.
Math We continue to use the Everyday Math program as a resourcefor our units of study. We have recently completed a unit on whole numbers and decimals. We are moving on to geometry. Please continue to support and maintain your child's fact fluency in addition, subtraction, and mutliplication. Fluency with these facts will help students as they work on math tasks that involve a variety of problem-solving strategies. Interactive Websites with reading and math activities: www.funbrain.com The reading page has Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Amelia Writes Again, and MadLibs! www.brainpopjr.com (username: coxpop6 password: brainpop) This site contains movies in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies, with quizzes and fun activities. It also has a website for ESL and the intermediate/high school level!
Science and Social Studies Third graders have started their first FOSS unit: Measurement. These investigations are hands-on and allow the students to explore length, mass, and volume with the metric system.
Students have learned about the continents and oceans. Ask your child to perform the "Continent Chant": "North America, South America, Europe, Asia too, Africa, Australia, Antarctica it's true- all these 7 make the list of big blocks of land, they are the 7 continents let's give them all a hand!"
