  4. Each student will improvise vocally, melodically, and instrumentally with xylophones and with dance.
  5. Each student will be able to read or recognize basic music notation.
  6. Each student will be able to listen to, describe and analyze music patterns and instruments’ style and moods.
  7. Each student will be able to evaluate music and musical performances.
  8. Each student will be able to make connections between music and other subjects such as history, art, literature and math.

Classes are presently focusing on learning essentials numbers 1, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

It should be noted that these learning essentials spiral over a period of five years.  Generally, in any given music lesson, several skills are worked on and occur in various levels of preparation, practice, review and assessment. This means that in any 30 or 40 minute music lesson, learnings can change every 7 or 8 minutes.  In this way, Guilford’s 18 hour per year elementary music program can accomplish the above essential learnings.
