Guilford Public Schools

News and Notes from the Main Office

"Extra Pair of Hands

We appreciate the valuable time our volunteers give to help in the Guilford Public Schools. In an effort to ensure the best experience possible for both the students and our volunteers, we require an orientation session for all adults who volunteer in Guilford Public Schools. The session offers an overview of the “Extra Pair of Hands” program, different approaches for dealing with children, and safety guidelines.

All parents, guardians, and family members who plan to volunteer in classrooms, on field trips, during special events, and at PTO activities this year must attend an orientation session. If you attended an orientation session during another school year, you are NOT required to attend again.

The orientation sessions are scheduled at various times for your convenience and are open to family members from all Guilford schools. Please share this information with adult family members, such as grandparents, who may want to volunteer for activities such as field trips or special activities in the spring. They, too, must attend an orientation session.

Mr. Ross will be offering the training sessions. If you need to be trained, please call the main office 457-0222 or e-mail Mrs. Cricchi at cricchik@guilford.k12.ct.us to arrange a meeting time. Thank you for your cooperation.

DROP OFF/DISMISSAL PICK UP

There are times when a child does not take the school bus to school and is to be dropped off in private car. Please note that students are to be dropped off in the lower lot and will walk on the sidewalk to the cafeteria.

PICKING UP STUDENTS – AFTER SCHOOL – All students who are to be picked up will be waiting in the cafeteria. Parents may park in the lower lot and enter the school through the cafeteria entrance. For safety reasons, we ask that you come into the cafeteria and walk your child to your car.

DURING SCHOOL HOURS – You may use the front entrance and come to the main office when picking up a student for an appointment or illness. Parents must sign the student dismissal logbook before exiting the building.

NOTES FOR PICKING UP STUDENTS – To be dismissed, a student must bring a note, written and signed by a parent, stating the time that the child is to be picked up, who will be picking up the child and the reason why the child must leave early. This note should be taken to the main office for approval prior to the beginning of classes in the morning.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

On rainy days, please be assured that when you drop your children off in the lower lot we will not expect them to run down the sidewalk in the pouring rain and get soaking wet in order to enter through the cafeteria. That would not the best way to start the school day! On rainy days students will be directed to enter the building through the lowerside doors right where you drop them off. This will bring them into the sixth grade hallways and teachers will then send the students to the cafeteria or the main foyer. We hope that this procedure will make everyone’s day a little brighter. So, we would appreciate you following the designated drop off procedure in the lower parking lot even on rainy days. Thank you for your cooperation!

Homework Request

If a student is absent from school for one or two days due to illness or a family emergency, parents need not be concerned about calling the school to obtain the missed work assignments. When the student returns to school she/he should then check with the teachers for the missed assignments. It is important that the child focus on getting well without having to worry about completing work.

If a student is absent for more than three days due to illness or family emergency, parents may call the Guidance office directly at 457-0222 ext. 226 between 8:15-10:15 a.m. to make arrangements for assignments and necessary books to be obtained from the child’s teachers and picked up at the end of the school day.

LOST AND FOUND

Please check the lost and found located in the cafeteria regularly.

All items not claimed are donated to Good Will.

Communications

If your child is going to an activity or a friends house after school, a note from a parent/guardian regarding this change need to be brought to the main office first thing in the morning. Students must receive a bus pass or an earlydismissal pass from the office.

PHONE USE: We need to ask for your cooperation in helping your children with organizing their needs and plans. Please reinforce with your children that they should not call a parent/guardian during the school day to make last minute plans for after school arrangements. It is impossible to handle non-school related issues. The two phones in the office are for emergency calls only.

Many students now carry their own cell phones. We respect the need for some to carry them. Cell phones are to be kept off during the school day to prevent disruptions in the classroom. Any incoming messages for students need to be conveyed through the main office.

After School Activities

When students are planning after school activities, they need to bring a note, signed by a parent/guardian, to the Main Office by 8:30a.m. Children going on a different bus or getting off at a different stop need to have a bus pass before boarding the bus. Students to be picked up early should have a pass to be released from class. An early dismissal list is generated in the morning so “specials teachers” will know why a student is not in their class.

If you are picking up your child after school, please come into the cafe to meet your child and escort him/her safely out to your car. These arrangements should be made in advance by a note from home in the morning.

I forgot my math book!

Oh my goodness, I forgot my MATH BOOK!.??!.

When your child comes home from school and realizes he/she has forgotten their math book (and they have math homework tonight,) their lunch box or jacket at school, don’t let panic set in! You may come to retrieve the forgotten item after school hours. Before 5pm use the front door or after 5pm come in through the cafeteria doors on the lower level parking lot. If the doors are locked, there is a doorbell located next to the double doors-A custodian will open the door for you. Please have patience; it may take them a few minutes to come!

Check Fees

There are many times during the school year when Parents/Guardians send money to school for field trips, instruments or other school activities. Please be aware if your check is returned to Baldwin for insufficient funds, account closed or any other reason you will be charged the $10.00 service charge the bank bestows to us.
