Baldwin Physical Education Policies and Expectations
The middle school physical education program will be comprised of team sport activities. Dual and individual sport competition will be introduced on a moderate basis as lifetime activities. Emphasis will continue to be stressed along the lines of fitness testing and its implications.
- Change of clothes: shorts, T shirt (no spaghetti straps / cami’s), sneakers & socks (no slip-ons or platform sneakers). Sweats are recommended in cold or inclement weather.
- Grades: Effort grades will be used for 5th and 6th grade
- Participation – Students should take an active part in all exercises, drills and games to the best of one’s ability.
- Preparation / Effort – coming to class prepared with a change of clothes
- Attitude / Conduct – Students should work with others in a positive manner, display good sportsmanship, put forth a high level of effort in order to improve their: skills, knowledge, and fitness in a variety of activities.
- Safety
- Students are not to touch, handle, or get on any equipment in the gym without expressed permission from the instructor.
- Students should remove jewelry before participating
- Horseplay and running around the locker room area is not permitted
- Report all accidents to the teacher when it happens before leaving class.
- Excuses: participation may be excused in writing by parents, guardians, or school nurse. A doctor’s note is required if injury or illness requires total restriction from participation and again when resuming class activities.
- Girls (only) may choose to keep clothing and items in a locker in the girls’ locker room; you must bring in a combination lock and sign out a locker with the P.E. teacher before placing it on.
- Fitness Testing: All students will be participating in both the CT Fitness Testing this fall consisting of: ( 1 mile walk/run, Push-ups, Curl-ups, Sit & Reach)
“Personal Best” Fitness Test Score Improvement Program: students select the 1 event they would like to work on from the Fall Fitness Test scores. The Fall scores will be used as a baseline, students will be retested in Spring ( May) and comparisons made between the two. Students practice their event for 3 minutes at the start of each P. E. class and are encouraged to practice on own (program starts in January and concludes in May).
