About Abraham Baldwin Middle School

Abraham Baldwin was born in North Guilford on November 22, 1754. He was the son of Michael Baldwin, the Guilford blacksmith and an influential man in the community. Baldwin was a graduate of Yale University and was a teacher there until 1781, when he was offered the opportunity to set up a university in Georgia. In 1787 he represented Georgia at the Federal Constitutional Convention. He was influential in achieving the Continental Compromise which called for a federal legislature composed of a House of Representatives elected according to population and a Senate with an equal number of representatives from each state. This was regarded as his greatest achievement for without Baldwin's vote, the convention would have been deadlocked and could have failed to produce the Constitution as we know it. When a new middle school was completed in North Guilford in 1970, it was named for Abraham Baldwin, one of Guilford's most illustrious native sons. (learn more about Abraham Baldwin)

The mission of Abraham Baldwin Middle School is based on the premise that an early adolescent in middle school is a person in transition who will experience many developmental changes and who will have individual needs and interests that vary widely. Abraham Baldwin Middle School (grades 5 and 6) offers unique programs tailored to the needs of early adolescents. Using the "team" concept, students receive daily instruction in the core curricula subjects of language arts, math, reading, science and social studies. The students at Baldwin also participate in a variety of related arts subjects which are designed to engage early adolescents in creative, exploratory learning experiences.

A wide range of after-school activities are available through the after-school activities program. Student council, newspaper club and various instrumental sports are popular choices, with yearbook, computer and video clubs, and environmental and service groups offering other opportunities. Cultural arts assemblies by visiting artists and lecturers broaden students' experiences.

Baldwin Middle School has an active Parent/Teacher Organizations (PTO) made up of parents, staff and members of the community who participate in the formation of plans and priorities for the improvement of each school and its programs. PTOs help to provide cultural and social events for students and parents which make school life more special, as well as providing time and support to teachers and students.
