Technology Education - Mr. Sumner

The Technology Education course teaches the skills necessary to plan, design, and create projects from start to finish.

Using technological design and engineering principles, students create boats, rockets, bridges, and vehicles.

7th Grade    Projects for 2008-2009

ROCKETS

Students will build rockets while learning basic drafting skills, both manually and using a Computer Assisted Drafting program. They will fire them outdoors, measure their success and use a spreadsheet to record the data.

BOATS

Each student will design a boat on paper. They will move on to the computer where they will write about it, draw plans, and record measurements in a spreadsheet. In the process they will learn to use hand and power tools.

8th Grade Projects

VEHICLES

Eighth grade students will construct vehicles of their own design. They will sketch their designs in 3D then move on to the computer where they will draw them using a Computer Assisted Drafting program. Once the plan is drawn the students create a spreadsheet to list the materials needed to actually construct the vehicle. They keep track of the "cost" of the materials as they build and test their vehicles. They will use a word processor to write about their successes and adventures during the building process.

BRIDGES

Students will work in groups designing and constructing bridges. They will use a computer simulator to try out their ideas before they actually build their own bridge out of wood, paper, cardboard, string, straws and similar materials. The expectation is that the bridge will hold the vehicle from the first project as well as a much heavier test vehicle. There is a written report, a spreadsheet, and a CAD drawing required for this project.
