Lesson 1

  Lesson 6

Course Expectations and Overview

Today, students will be given a written summary of the course's expectations and overview.  Students will be expected to have this handout signed by a parent or guardian and return the document at the start of Lesson 2.  Students will also be given a reading assignment that will be relevant for a baseline assessment that will be given during Lesson 2.  This assessment will be in the form of a released CAPT Interdisciplinary Writing Response and it will be graded.

Introductions and Conclusions

Students will be instructed on the elements of a strong introduction and conclusion.  Activities in class will provide them with the opportunity to practice this skill by revising the introduction and conclusion of their Interdisciplinary Writing response..  For homework, students should continue working on their revision and complete a critical reading of "the Body Ritual Amongst the Mecra Nai."

CAPT Interdisciplinary Writing Response:

Students will develop a written response to a prompt that has been created in conjunction with the reading assignment given during Lesson 1.  This assessment will be graded using the CAPT Rubric.


 

"Accountable Talk" and Perspective

Students will begin class by continuing their practice of "interacting with the text."  The process of Accountable Talk will be reviewed and used in a discussion of the previous lesson's homework assignment.  The discussion will focus upon the concept of perspective in historical research.

Thesis Statements:

Today students will learn how to properly construct thesis statements. They will evaluate the quality of a variety of statements based on certain criteria and requirements. For homework, they will use what they have learned to correct a series of weak thesis statements.

How can we best record information from written sources?

Students will be introduced to a variety of note taking strategies that aim at different learning styles.  They will also be made aware of the importance of including citations within notes in an effort to avoid plagiarism.  Students will be given the opportunity to practice one of the four note taking strategies as they review for our upcoming exam.

How can we assess the quality of our writing?

Today's lesson on self-assessment will focus primarily on the organization of an argument. Students will review the key elements of a formal argument and body paragraphs.  Attention will be placed on reviewing student generated thesis statements. Students will review and assess a CAPT Exemplar using a method that they will use to assess their own writing for homework. We will reflect on the process and product and ultimately develop a standard outline for forming a written argument.

Unit Assessment

Students will complete a unit assessment aimed at evaluating their mastery of the material covered during the previous 8 lessons.  Upon completing the exam, students will create a map of Ancient Greece that they will use as a reference for our upcoming unit.

How can we assess the quality of our writing?

Today's lesson on self assessment will focus primarily upon writing rules for historians and the rubrics that we will use throughout the year.  We will reflect upon the process, product and self-assessment of the CAPT Interdisciplinary Writing Activity.  Students will be introduced to the School Wide Writing Rubric.  Students will learn to use the rubric to evaluate writing.  Students will be given the opportunity to revise their Interdisciplinary Writing Assessment in an effort to solidify their skills and raise their grade.
