Lesson 61: Timeline & Key Terms for the unit

  Lesson 65 : Which 2 countries best met the needs of the leaders and which 2 countries best met the needs of the people?

Students will be responsible for gathering a list of the dates and events that occur within Chapter 17.  Students must make a timeline of the 15 most significant dates and include a key descibing each of those 15 events.  Students are also expected to gather information about a variety of terms listed within the chapter.  The list of terms is provided below.  Both of these assignments will be featured on an upcoming homework quiz.

Terms to be Defined

  Groups will reconvene to assess and revise each member's essay.  The goal will be to choose the strongest paragraphs from each group member and develop a combined essay featuring at least one body paragraph from each group member.  This newly created essay must be typed by one group member and submitted for a group grade during Lesson 66. This essay will be graded using the Social Studies Writing Rubric.

Students will further prepare for an upcoming document based question by completing a chart of background information relating to the unit essential question for each country being studied.  Students will use their textbooks to gather information about each country.

In preparation for the demands of an upcoming independent research assignment, students will be encouraged to develop their own analytical questions about the 11 documents covered in our most recent document based qusetion.  Some of these student generated questions will be featured on an upcoming exam.

  Lesson 67: Homework Quiz and Reading for Information

Students will work in groups to critically read the documents being featured in this unit's document based question.  Groups are encouraged to use their background charts in a pre-reading strategy that aims at developing a purpose for reading each document.

  Students will take a homework quiz that assesses the first 3 assignments of this unit.  These assignments were featured in Lesson 61 and 62.  Students will also take part in a "Reading for Information" Activity which features a primary source from the time period being studied.

  Lesson 68: Review for Unit Exam

Students will continue to work in groups to critically read the documents and generate a group thesis statement that best answers the document based question.  For homework, each group member is responsible for individually writing a six paragraph essay that makes use of their group thesis statement.
