GHS Athletes of the Month for 2007 - 2008

At the end of each month, the varsity coach of each in-season sport nominates one player from his/her program that deserves to be recognized for their outstanding athletic accomplishments during the month. A selection committee determines the award winners based on the nominations of the coaches. Each student athlete of the month receives an engraved plaque that is purchased by Sideliners.

MAY ATHLETES
Katherine Crabtree and Michael Ruotolo

Katherine, a junior member of the Girls track team, finished an outstanding junior year running. She set school records in the 800M, 1600M and she is also a member of the 4 x 800 relay team that set a school record as well. Her finishes in the State Open Championship qualified her to compete in the New England Championships for the 1600M and the 4 x 800 relay. She was selected to the All Hammonasset Team in the 800M and the 1600M.  She is the daughter of Janice Crabtree and Jeff Ambroziak.

Michael is a senior member of the Boys Tennis team. For the season he went 3-2 at singles and 7-0 at doubles. Michael was selected to the New Haven Register All-Area Team and was the Class M Doubles State Champion along with Jeff Deacon. He received All State honors and was invited with Deacon to represent Class M in the State Open. Michael has dominated most opponents with his quick serve and volley. He leads by example and is a tremendous asset to our program. He is the son of Kathleen and Michael Ruotolo.
     

APRIL ATHLETES

Brad is a senior and captain of the boy’s golf team. As a captain and leader he is hard working and dedicated both on and off the greens.  Brad led the team for the month of April with a stroke average under 3. He also shot a 1 under par this month with a 33 score. Brad was also a member of the varsity skiing team this past winter. He is the son of Elaine and Hawley Lincoln.

Emma is a senior and co-captain of the softball team. For the month of April her stats include 13 games, 16 hits, 37 at-bats, 4 doubles, 10 RBI’s, and a .432 batting average. In addition, as a pitcher, Emma is responsible for 2 victories and a 2.27 ERA. She is an outstanding leader who is always willing to help the younger players. She is the daughter of Diane and Erwin Stockmann.

 

Taylor is a senior and captain of the boy’s fencing team. He placed first in the Connecticut High School Fencing Championship as an individual, and led his team to the first place boys foil title. Taylor has worked remarkably hard all season.  He is always putting 100% into practice and pushes himself to be better.  His hard work and dedication resulted in his winning both the individual state title, as well as leading his team to the state title.  Taylor also leads the team as the captain and is admired and respected by his teammates.  Taylor is the son Judy Wright and Tim Gregoire.

Jasmine is a sophomore member of the Girls “One Man” Gymnastics team. As a participating member of the Madison team, Jasmine performed well all season. Her performances all season qualified her for the State Competition. Jasmine’s outstanding performance in the State Competition earned her 1st team All State recognition. She is also a member of the Volleyball and softball teams. Jasmine is the daughter of Dorothy and Gregory Walwer.

     
FEBRUARY ATHLETES

Addie Sanders and Kevin Enright

Nicole is a senior member of the Girls Ice Hockey team. She was instrumental in our 6 wins and 0 losses during the month of February. As a goalie Nicole gave up only 10 goals in 6 games, 1.67 goals against average. She also made 104 saves on 114 shots against her for a 92% save average. With any other goalie in the league the team would not have finished 20-1 for the season. Nicole is the daughter of Cathy and Tom Provencher.

Caitlyn is a senior and captain of the Girls Fencing team. Her personal record at this point is 14:2 in Foil and 8:3 in Epee. Caitlyn has been a strong leader. She is always an outstanding example of sportsmanship and team work. Caitlyn has done an outstanding job in Foil as one of the starting fencers and has become one of the top Epee fencers as well. She is the daughter of Rosemary and David Jones.

 

Addie is a senior captain of the girl’s ice hockey team. In the month of January, Addie had 4 goals and 4 assists for a total of 8 points in leading the team to a 4-1 record.  She was also instrumental in key wins over New Canaan, Notre-Dame of Fairfield and Hand. Addie is a hardworking and dedicated player. She is the daughter of Diana and George Sanders.

Kevin is one of the senior captains of the boy’s ice hockey team. In the month of January, Kevin scored 3 goals and had 3 assists.  More importantly he played solid defense all month against league rivals Amity, Lyman Hall and Cheshire. He played excellent defense against Hand and figured in holding Staple scorers down to a 3-2 victory. Kevin is the best defensive player which doesn’t always show up in the box score.  He is the son of Linda and Thomas Enright.

     

DECEMBER ATHLETES

NOVEMBER ATHLETES
Molly Saunders and Emily Barber

Sarah is a senior and a captain of the girl’s ice hockey team. In seven games during December Sarah had 11 goals and 8 assists for a total of nineteen points in helping to lead the team to a 7 – 0 record. Sarah was also a force on defense breaking up opponent’s rushes on our goal. The nineteen points and average of 2.71 points a game have made her a strong force on the ice. Sarah is the daughter of Natalie and Brian Lorentson.

Kyle is a junior and tri-captain of the wrestling team. He wrestles in the 160-pound weight class. For the month of December his personal record was 10 wins and 1 loss winning by pin 7 out of 10 times. Kyle was also champion of his weight class at the Guilford Invitational Tournament this past December. He has been a good role model for the team on and off the wrestling mat. Kyle is the son of Cheryl Walker and Brian Lundberg.
 

Molly is a senior and tri-captain of the Field Hockey Team. In the month of November Molly led her team to a 6 – 3 – 0 – 1 record. Her statistics include 2 goals and 2 assists from the midfield position this month. As captain, Molly has led her team by example both on and off the field this season. Individual honors awarded Molly this year include selections to the All SCC First Team and the All State team. Molly is the daughter of Laurie and Kevin Saunders.

Emily is a junior and member of the Girls “One Man” Swim team. As a participating member of the Branford team, Emily broke 3 GHS records; the 200 yd Freestyle, 500 yd Freestyle and the 100 yd breaststroke. Her times in these events qualified her to compete in the SCC, Class M and the State Open meets. Her best finish was at the Class M State meet of the 100 yd Breaststroke where she finished in 1st place capturing the Class M State Title of that event.  Individual honors for Emily this season include All SCC and All State in the 100 yd Breaststroke. Emily is the daughter of Dawn and Mark Barber.

SEPTEMBER ATHLETES
Shelby Mancini and Fred Turcio

Amelia is a senior and member of the Girls Cross Country Team. She has been one of the top runners for the girl’s team this year. Her contributions this year have helped the team capture the Hammonasset Divisional Title, the SCC Championship Title as well as the Class MM State Team Championship Title for the fourth year in a row. Individual honors awarded Amelia this year include selections to the All Hammonasset, All SCC, ALL State and the New Haven Register All Area Cross Country teams. She is the daughter of April Frost and Michael Farnham.

Ryan is a senior co-captain of the Boy’s Soccer team. He is a hard working forward on the field, and he leads his team by example on and off the field. Ryan has had an amazing season this year scoring 4 hat tricks thus far. He leads the team in scoring with 24 goals so far this year. His presence on the field is both a threat to the opponent and a support for his team. Ryan led the team in capturing the Hammonasset Divisional Title. He is the son of Susan and David Brockett.

 

Shelby is a junior and member of the Volleyball team. For the month of September she averaged 4 kills, 3 digs, 15 service points and 4 aces per match. Shelby has been a contributor to the volleyball team’s morale as much as she has athletically thus far. Her passion for the game, her skill development and her work ethic are invaluable. She sets an example for the team both in word and in action. Shelby is the daughter of Liz and James Mancini.

Fred is a senior tri-captain of the Football team. He continues to be a dominant force for the offensive team again this year. In the three games for the month of September he rushed for 497 yards and scored 4 touchdowns. For his performance in week one of the football schedule, Fred was once again voted New Haven Register player of the week. His passion for the game is second to none. Fred is the son of Maria and Fred Turcio.
