GHS Athletes of the Month for 2011 - 2012
At the end of each month, the varsity coach of each in-season sport nominates one player from his/her program that deserves to be recognized for their outstanding athletic accomplishments during the month. A selection committee determines the award winners based on the nominations of the coaches. Each student athlete of the month receives an engraved plaque that is purchased by Sideliners.

MARCH ATHLETES
MaKenzi Gennette & David Slattery

|
MaKenzi is a senior and captain of the girl’s fencing team. MaKenzi lead this year’s squad to a 14 - 4 combined record for the Foil and Epee teams. As a result of her regular season efforts, MaKenzi earned a spot in the post season tournaments. At the Individual State Championships for Epee, she finished 3rd in a field of 41 earning All State 1st team honors. At the State Team Championships, MaKenzi’s efforts also helped the team capture the 2012 State Epee Title. MaKenzi is the daughter of LaVon and Mark Gennette.
David is a senior and captain of the boy’s fencing team. Under the leadership of David, this year’s boys squad ended its regular season with a combined record for Epee and Foil of 16 – 2. At the Individual State Championships for Epee, he finished 8th in a field of 61 earning All State 2nd team honors. At the State team Championships, David lead his squad to come-from-behind victories in both the semi-finals and finals. His efforts helped the team capture the 2012 State Epee Title. David is the son of Marta and James Slattery. |
FEBRUARY ATHLETES
Bronwyn Reeve & Jake Brocksieper

Bronwyn is a sophomore member of the girls fencing team. In only her second year as part of the program, Bronwyn has had an outstanding season this year. Her performances throughout the regular season earned her a spot in the post season Epee competitions. In the Individual State Championships Bronwyn earned a silver medal, a second place finish. At the State Team Championships, she was a member of the Girls Epee team that captured the State title. Bronwyn is the daughter of Victoria and Maxwell Reeve.
Jake is a senior member of the boys fencing team. He too earned himself a spot in the post season Epee competitions due to his performances throughout the regular season. Jake closed out his senior year with his best result ever as a Guilford High School fencer. In the Individual State Championships Jake also earned a silver medal, a second place finish. At the State Team Championships, he was a member of the Boys Epee team that captured the State title as well. Jake is the son of Susan and George Brocksieper. |
JANUARY ATHLETES
Jack Fitzgerald & Julianna Molloy

Jack is a sophomore member of the boy’s ice hockey team. He works hard each day in practice and is a consistent competitor who has contributed much to the team’s success. Jack is the leading scorer on the team this year and his stats for the month of January are 5 goals and 2 assists in six games including his first hat trick versus Newtown. Jack has a positive attitude and is very coachable. He listens constructively to coaching that will help him improve as a player. Jack is the son of Diane and Richard Fitzgerald.
Julianna is a senior member of the girl’s ice hockey team. She is a true team player who has been working really hard this season helping the team to qualify for the SCC and State playoffs. Julianna’s overall stats for the season thus far are 10 goals with 5 assists. Julianna has stepped up as a senior by being a versatile, utility player. Not only has she performed highly in her forward position but she has also filled in defensively as needed. She has a great ability to see the entire ice surface, and has a great understanding of the whole team. Julianna is the daughter of Mary Beth and Charles Molloy. |
DECEMBER ATHLETES
Emily Taylor & Ray Sherwood

Emily is a senior and captain of the girls indoor track team. Emily has run consistently well this month, finishing in the top positions of the events that she competes in which include the 1600m and the 1000m. Notable finishes for Emily this month include 1st place at the SCC Developmental meet and the Wilton Reindeer Relays, and a 2nd place finish at the Shoreline Coaches invitational all in the 1600m event. Other achievements for Emily include one of the top 5 mile(1600m) times in the state this year. Emily is the daughter of Pat and Randall Taylor.
Ray is a senior and one of the captains of the wrestling team. For the month of December his personal record was 15-0. Five of those bouts he won by pins. Ray was also champion of his weight class at the Guilford Invitational Tournament this past December. He is a very dedicated wrestler whose year round hard work is now paying off. He is primed for more accomplishments this season. He is the son of Lisa and Raymond Sherwood. |
NOVEMBER ATHLETES
Corinne Sejourne & Matt Hoey

Corinne is a senior member of the girls cross country team. Her steady performances this season were instrumental in leading the team into the SCC, State Class MM and State Open Championship meets. She had an outstanding performance in the State Open meet where she was the first one across the finish line for Guilford. Corinne was selected to the All-Hammonasset and All-State teams. She is the daughter of Kate and Eric Sejourne.
Matt is a senior and one of the captains of the football team. He led the team to a 2-2 finish through the end of the season. For the month of November, offensively Matt rushed for 240 yards on 38 carries scoring 4 touchdowns and had 6 receptions for 110 yards scoring 2 touchdowns. Defensively, he had 6 tackles and 1 interception as a cornerback. Matt has played tough all around this year and has had a great season earning himself SCC All-Conference honors offensively. He is the son of Cheryl and Matt Hoey. |
OCTOBER ATHLETES
Leigh Rooney & Kevin Jacobsen

Leigh Rooney is a senior co-captain of the field hockey team. She has been a varsity starter for 3 years. In the month of October Leigh led her team to an 8 - 2 record. Her statistics include 12 goals and 6 assists in 10 games from the midfield position this month. As a captain, Leigh has led her team by example both in the classroom and on the field this season. Individual honors awarded Leigh this year include selections to the All SCC First Team, All State 2nd team and New Haven Register All-Area. Leigh is the daughter of Tracy and Lawrence Rooney.
Kevin Jacobsen is a senior and co-captain of the boys’ soccer team. For the month of October his stats include 6 goals and 9 assists. Kevin has led the team to a 9 - 2 - 5 record thus far this season. He has been the backbone of the team all season. Individual honors awarded Kevin this year include selections to the All Hammonassett Team, All-State team and New Haven Register All-Area. Kevin is the son of Kathy and Bruce Jacobsen. |
SEPTEMBER ATHLETES
Marissa Mormile & Kevin Maguire

Marissa is a senior captain of the girls’ soccer team. On the field she plays central defense, and her performance helped the defense record 3 shutouts and an overall record of 4-1-1 this month. Marissa has come back strong this year after an ACL tear the previous year. Her contributions have helped the team give up less than 1 goal a game thus far. Marissa plays an important role both on and off the field as both a leader and a player. She is the daughter of Carole and Michael Mormile.
Kevin is a senior and co-captain of the boy’s cross country team. He led his team to a 7-0 record for September. Individually, Kevin placed first in 3 meets all of which were against SCC Conference teams. Those meets included teams such as; Branford, Foran, Wilbur Cross, Hamden, Jonathan Law and Cheshire. As a team leader Kevin paces the team and sets the bar high. He is the son of Christine and Matthew Maguire. |
