2009-10 First Percussion Ensemble Meeting
Thursday September 3rd @ 3:30 PM in the GHS Band Room
The Guilford High School Percussion Ensemble was formed by John Gage and Mark Gahm in the fall of 2001. Unlike many of the groups in the genre, this ensemble sets itself apart by featuring multi-instrumental talent from all of the GHS music programs. A typical concert includes the gamut of percussion instruments, from bass drums to buckets; from rudimental drumming to rubber dishgloves. However, it also exposes the audience to sounds as diverse as flute, viola, voice, piano, double bass, cello and oboe. Performing works by noted percussion composers David Gillingham, Paul Creston and Christopher Rouse, the ensemble strives to play music from the traditional repertoire. Always surprising audiences with new and interesting arrangements, however, these students have also performed the music of Jimi Hendrix, Sting, the Beatles, Norah Jones, Pat Metheny, and Radiohead. In addition to playing concerts at the high school, the GHS Percussion Ensemble reaches out to younger audiences and the broader community, appearing yearly at the local middle schools and an area arts showcase. In 2007 the GHS P.E. was chosen as the only high school percussion ensemble in the Northeast to perform at the MENC Eastern Division conference.
