Spotlight On...


Medal images from the American Library Association, Newbery and Caldecott Award Homepages.
In 1921 the American Library Association enthusiastically received a proposal that it should award a medal for the most distinguished children's book each year.  The proposal was accepted in 1922 and the first Newbery Award winner was announced.  The medal was named for the eighteenth-century book seller, John Newbery.

In 1937 a companion award for the most distinguished picture book of the year was established.  This award was named the Caldecott Medal in honor of the nineteenth-century illustrator, Randolph J. Caldecott.

Today, the Newbery Medal, along with the Caldecott Medal, are the most prestigious awards in children's literature. The medals honor outstanding writing and illustration of children's books published in the U.S. during the previous year.
