Week 1

Monday: No School

Tuesday: Introduction to course.  In-class writing assignment.  Students will respond to a writing prompt from the article History is a Mystery.  Pass out and review course expectations.  Homework:  Students should have their parents read and sign the expectation course sheet.

Wednesday:  Review emergency action plans.  Pass out books.  Collect signed expectations sheets.  Homework:  Cover text books and read Chapter 1, Section 3, pages 15-19 and complete the BIG IDEA worksheet.

Thursday:  Teacher led discussion on Equality, Freedom, and Justice.  Homework: Read Chapter 2, Sections 1 and 2, pages 25 - 34 and complete the Big Idea worksheet for each section. 

Friday: Review homework and categorize the list of adjectives describing what it means to be American.

Week 2

Monday: Teacher led discussion on the building blocks of society and four basic functions of government.  First definition of government presented in class: A tool by which groups of people cooperating together make become better off than if they were to work alone. 

Tuesday: Students will complete a 30 question assessment that will help develop where their values place them on the political spectrum between LIBERAL and CONSERVATIVE.

Wednesday:   Political Spectrum is discussed in great detail. Two representational models are presented in class.  One is based off of a line and the other is based off of a graph.

Thursday: 

Friday: Students will participate in a teacher led discussion on the differences between the Melting Pot theory and the Mosaic theory in terms of national population.  Students will determine which theory most accurately represents our current population

Week 3

 

Monday: Review Rights and Responsibilities associated with citizenship.  Particular attention is paid to the right to vote. Level 1 responded to the Theory of Rationality and voter participation rights.  Level 2 responded to the voter reward act.

Tuesday: Level 2 students will participate in a discussion regarding Citizenship, its benefits, and how those living in America without citizenship are impacted.

Wednesday:  Summative Assessment. 

Thursday:  New Unit: Political Ideology and Historical origins of American Politics.  Government will be defined and students will participate in a collective action/prisoner's dilemma activity.  Complete types of government activity for homework using the CIA World Fact Book found online.

Friday: Teacher led discussion on the political spectrum and how it relates to power and authority.

Week 4

Monday: New Unit: The Road to Independence.  Teacher led discussion on the importance of documenting expectations in a legal document.  Review of the Charter Oak story in CT.

Tuesday:  Teacher led discussion on America's political heritage based on religion

Wednesday:  Teacher led discussion on America's political heritage based on religion

Thursday:  Video Presentation: The Road to Runneymead:  Students will complete associated worksheet while watching the presentation.

Friday:  Teacher led discussion on the Rumblings of the colonists.

 

Week 5

Monday:Teacher led discussion on rights and responsibilities associated with living in American society.

Tuesday: Alternative presentation on the power of voting.  In class experiment illustrating that an uniformed voter has no effect upon a national election.

Wednesday:  Voting Continued

Thursday:  Review

Friday:  Unit test covering chapters 1-3 in the text book.
