High Schools

Guilford High School

Guilford High School, serving grades 9 through 12, is located near the geographic center of town on New England Road. The High School offers a wide variety of courses allowing students to choose from a broad range of classes. Advanced students may enroll in Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, English, French, Human Geography, Physics, Spanish, U.S. History and Western Civilization or attend a neighboring college or university to complement their education at GHS.

College Board Scholastic Assessment Test and Connecticut Academic Performance Tests results for GHS students are consistently above state, regional and national averages. Guilford High School students have won many regional and national awards in the academic and creative arts fields.

There is a full range of cocurricular activities offered to the student at Guilford High School, including National Honor Society, Student Senate, yearbook, service organizations and language and literary clubs. The sports teams, who receive wide community support, include soccer, football, baseball, basketball, lacrosse, ice hockey, field hockey, fencing, wrestling, softball, tennis, volleyball, cross country, crew, track and golf. Acclaimed music, art and drama programs round out the varied experiences available to Guilford High School students.

Middle Schools

Abraham Baldwin Middle School

Abraham Baldwin Middle School (Grades 5 and 6) offers unique programs tailored to the needs of the middle-school aged student. Using the "team" concept, students receive daily classes in five major areas: language arts, math, reading, science, and social studies. In addition, instruction is offered at various grade levels in a computer laboratory, world languages, art, music, health and physical education. Guilford Middle School students have scored well above the State average on the Grade 6 and 8 Mastery Tests.

A full range of after-school activities is available at both middle schools. Student Council, yearbook, computer and video clubs, and environmental and service groups are popular choices. Cultural arts assemblies by visiting artists and lecturers broaden student experiences. Sports include soccer, field hockey, basketball, wrestling and softball. Spirit days, pep rallies and all-school gatherings, including theme parties and dances, are held throughout the year to increase school spirit.

Elementary Schools

The elementary schools in Guilford - A.W. Cox, Calvin Leete, Guilford Lakes, and Melissa Jones - accommodate grades Pre-Kindergarten (at Lakes) through Grade 4. Children may begin their formal education in Guilford if they are five years old by December 31 of the school year. Kindergarten classes are 2 1/2 hours long and average 16 students per class.

In grades one through four, class sizes average 19 students per class. Most classes in the elementary schools are grouped heterogeneously. The classroom teacher is well supported by special teachers for art, music and physical education. Each elementary school has a library staffed by a librarian/media specialist. Computer laboratories are equipped with the newest in computer technology further enhancing an enrichment program for elementary students which develops strengths each child possesses.

A.W. Cox School

At A.W. Cox, we view learning as a continually evolving process. Our goal is to take children from where they are and give them the necessary skills/tools to grow and be successful learners. We recognize that there are a variety of learning styles and have made a commitment to meet the assorted and individual needs of all our learners.

To that end, we value the importance of ongoing professional development. As teaching professionals, we strive to remain current in strategies and methodologies that are research based and have been assessed for successful implementation. We want to expose our children to the most positive, motivating strategies and materials available.

Calvin Leete School

For the past 54 years, the staff members of Calvin Leete School and the involved families have supported and enriched the educational environment for all children. This commitment to excellence through the decades has made Calvin Leete School the thriving school community that it is today.

The Calvin Leete staff members are dedicated to providing quality instruction and the PTO is committed to sponsoring cultural programs, family activities, and numerous services for the school.
