World LanguageForeign Language in the Elementary SchoolFLES is an acronym for Foreign Language in the Elementary School. By design, FLES programs focus on communication and help support other content areas such as science, social studies, etc. in the elementary classroom. Another purpose of FLES is to build enthusiasm for language learning through early success that will be transferable to all languages. Grammar is not ignored, but it is learned indirectly rather than through direct instruction. FLES programs follow the natural sequence of language learning: understanding > speaking > reading > writing. The primary stress is on understanding and speaking. Instructional techniques appropriate for young children are incorporated such as physical activity and concrete experiences. The typical first grade FLES lesson plan might include songs, rhymes, games, and play-acting with puppets. |
