From the Office of the Superintendent of Schools2012 State of the Schools MessageDear Guilford School Community: Since joining the schools in November, I have been continually impressed by the quality of instruction, the commitment to improvement, and the enthusiasm with which our students and our parents engage in the work of learning that goes on in our schools. As a system, the Guilford schools have a clear and focused commitment to quality training and support of our teaching staff, we place our emphasis on student learning, and we are forward looking as we plan our work for the future. This past year, we have continued our intensive focus on instruction within our classrooms, and while our professional development calendar for our teaching staff was disrupted by Tropical Storm Irene and lost days at the beginning of the school year, we still provided a rich assortment of professional learning for our staff that centered around the topics of: our core Principles of Learning, the new Common Core State Standards, Technology in the Classroom, and interventions to support struggling learners. We have continued our Learning Walks this year to ensure that the work we do with our adult staff is being implemented at the classroom level, and we have expanded our literacy work at the elementary schools, rolling out new units and increasing the expectations for all children at those levels. We have also spent much time this year working on how our learning spaces themselves affect the work that the students do. Since our high school referendum passed in June of last year, the staff at Guilford High School and the district administration have been partnering with the Building Committee and the Architectural team to finalize designs for our new high school. This has been an open and democratic process, with much involvement from our teachers and from our community, and it has resulted in a design, nearly complete at this printing, that will emphasize communication and student learning, will give our students every opportunity to succeed in a variety of academic, artistic and athletic pursuits, and will truly make this community proud. Moving forward, our schools will continue to focus on high levels of learning for all our students. We will continue to focus our I am thankful to the Guilford Community for their support of our schools, and I look forward to continuing our work together.
