Summer Reading 2010

Kindergarten Suggested Reading
Families are encouraged to share a variety of books with their children, alphabet and counting books, stories emphasizing colors and shapes, rhyming tales, poetry and especially nursery rhymes.

It is suggested that when a child is read to, the adult points out the cover, title and author’s name and lines of print and talks about the illustrations. During and after reading talk about characters and events from the story, make connections to the child’s own life and share the love of reading. Children will enjoy becoming familiar with the stories of some of these authors available through the following link:
Kindergarten Summer Reading List

Grade 1 Suggested Reading
Families are encouraged to share a variety of books with their children, such as alphabet and counting books, rhyming tales and poetry, and especially many versions of traditional European folk tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Three Bears, Hansel and Gretel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Three Little Pigs, Rumpelstiltskin.

It is suggested that children become familiar with the stories of some of the authors in the link below.
Grade 1 Summer Reading List

Grade 2 Suggested Reading
Families are encouraged to read with their child a variety of factual science books about plants, soil, and nutrition, poetry, beginning biographies, and especially multicultural folk tales, those from areas other than Europe, such as the African Anansi tales.

Grade 3 Suggested Reading
Students are encouraged to read a variety of biographies, poetry, factual science books, particularly about wildlife and nature, and especially fables, tall tales and Native American legends.

Grade 4 Suggested Reading
Students are encouraged to read a variety of mysteries, poetry, historical fiction (particularly of American history before 1750), factual science books and especially myths, biographies, autobiographies, journals and memoirs.

Fourth Grade is the first year students are able to participate in the Connecticut Nutmeg Children's Book Award. Ten new titles are nominated each year and children vote for their favorite after reading the books. The nominees for the 2009 Nutmeg Book Award are included in the reading list below.

Guilford High School Summer Reading
The summer reading program at Guilford High School, part of a district-wide summer reading program, is intended to foster the spirit of the imagination at work in literature and to nurture the habit of reading. This summer program promotes the experience of reading for reading’s sake, encourages conversation among students, parents and teachers about books and their characters, and fosters choice and independence in reading. Our intent is to offer an array of rich text that students will find meaningful and relevant.
